Metabolism

Metabolism is a word that comes from the Greek word meaning change or transformation. There are many body processes that rely on metabolism, such as the conversion of food into energy, and we need to have a strong metabolism in order to be able to ward off infections, fight disease, maintain a healthy weight, heal injuries and eliminate toxins from the body. Without metabolism, we would not be able to survive.

Metabolism and Your Diet

Metabolism plays an important role in the digestion process, and it helps the body absorb the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and strong. Your metabolism is mainly affected by the foods you eat, your level of hydration, and the amount of physical activity you are getting. If you are not eating right, or you do not get enough exercise, you will have a lower metabolism than you should have. This can lead to a number of health issues, including being overweight or obese.

The higher your metabolism is, the better your body is going to be able to burn fat, and you will have an easier time maintaining a healthy weight. Of course, when we need to lose weight, one of the first things we do is to go on drastic diets, which can wreak havoc on our metabolism. For one thing, when you reduce calories, you decrease your metabolism. Because of this, you are actually going to burn fewer calories than you would like, and you won’t be able to lose weight. In fact, your body will actually begin to store fat to have in reserve. It is important to be able to find a healthy balance where you are getting enough calories, but not so many calories that you can’t lose weight.

Metabolism and Medications

When we take medications, our body breaks down the chemicals in the medications so that they can get to work. When you have a slow metabolism, your body is unable to break down larger molecules of the chemicals into smaller ones that the body can absorb more easily, so they will work better. If you are taking any sort of medications, it is important that you have a high metabolism in order for your body to get the most benefits from them. There are also some medications that can affect your metabolism, and while taking these medications, you may have to make some changes to your diet, and get more exercise, to make sure that your metabolism remains regulated.

There are other substances that can mess with your metabolism, including alcohol and nicotine. When a person smokes, it increases their metabolic rate. This is actually one of the main reasons why some people tend to gain weight when they are trying to quit smoking. Obviously, smoking is unhealthy and those who smoke should find ways to quit, but it is also important to find ways to keep the metabolism up at the same time so there is no weight gain.

Metabolic Disorders

There are a number of metabolic disorders that can affect the chemical reactions in a person’s body. These chemical reactions can disrupt the metabolism, and can lead to enzymes malfunction. There are also many metabolic disorders that are genetic. Some of the symptoms of these disorders include high blood pressure, blood clotting, and poor insulin production. There are many health conditions that can arise from metabolic disorders, including obesity. Other conditions include diabetes, Grave’s disease and Cushing’s disease.

  • Diabetes – Millions of Americans are affected by diabetes, which is a disorder that causes the body to not be able to create enough insulin, or properly use the insulin it does create. Our cells need to have insulin in order to be able to receive glucose, which is fuel that the body uses for energy. When a person has diabetes, they often have much higher levels of glucose in their blood than they should, and this does not get to the cells because there is not enough insulin, or the body is not processing the insulin in the proper way. There are a number of health problems that can be caused by diabetes, including high blood pressure, weight loss and poor eyesight. Those who have diabetes must watch their blood sugar levels closely, and in some cases, depending on the type of diabetes, they also must take insulin injections.
  • Grave’s Disease – This condition is also referred to as toxic diffuse goiter. This metabolic disorder affects the thyroid gland, causing it to be overactive. Basically, this disorder causes the body to create too much of the thyroid hormone, which controls many body functions, including breathing, the heart, and the nervous system, not to mention metabolism. Some of the symptoms of Grave’s disease include weight loss, loss of sight and heart palpitations. Medication is often used to treat this problem, as well as removal of the thyroid gland.
  • Cushing’s Syndrome – There are many metabolic disorders that can affect your hormones, including Cushing’s syndrome e. This causes the body to produce too much cortisol, which is a hormone that controls metabolism and blood pressure. Too much cortisol can cause people to gain weight, become tired and irritable, and even develop acne. If left untreated, this disease can lead to death. There are a number of things that can cause Cushing’s syndrome, including tumors, which usually require surgical removal.

In order to be able to maintain a healthy weight, you need to have a healthy metabolism. Many people who have been unsuccessful with weight loss often find that their problem has more to do with their metabolism than anything else, and when they are able to make the right changes to make sure that they have a normal and regulated metabolism, they are able to maintain their weight a whole lot easier. It is best to follow a healthy diet, get plenty of exercise, and have regular visits with your physician to make sure that you are in peak health, and that you do not end up with problems with your metabolism.
