There has been a tremendous amount of seesawing on the issue of whether one can get too much when it comes to vitamins and supplements. While supplements have been a popular choice for people who cannot seem to get a balanced diet, now it may be as important to make sure to get a balance when it comes to vitamins and supplements. The idea behind taking supplements is to increase the amount of healthy minerals your body gets, but recent studies have shown it may be important to closely monitor the amount you take.
What the Study Indicates
One thing researchers found, is that the wrong people may be taking supplements, to begin with. People who are concerned enough about their health to take supplements are, ironically, often times already getting a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals in their diet, naturally.
So, these people are, mostly, already at a healthy level of nutrients in their diet, but are loading up on additional amounts through supplements, and for no good reason. These results were more likely for females versus males, as a reported higher number of women take supplements over men. The reason these studies are so important is that, it turns out, taking too much of these supplements may even put you at a serious health risk.
Consider, for example, some people who are taking in supplements they think are making them healthier, and be overloading in things like iron, which can cause problems. Iron overdose can cause problems such as permanent damage to the heart and brain. It can also lead to a heart attack or stroke.
This happens because the body cannot excrete excess amounts of iron. There are certain vitamins and minerals that, in large does, the body cannot process or remove excess amounts of. If you are concerned about your levels of vitamins and minerals within your body, or your risk for health problems due to them, speak to your doctor.

There are, however, areas where people are still not paying enough attention to in their diets. Things like calcium are still proving to be something most diets are not including enough of. Calcium is something that is needed as part of a diet, throughout the course of one’s life, for all ages. In early infancy and childhood, it helps develop bones and keep you growing strong. As we age, calcium is of the utmost importance to keep bones strong. This is important to help prevent brittle bones that break more easily in the senior years. It also aids in the prevention of problems like osteoporosis.
If you take supplements, like these, it is a good idea to monitor your intake. This is especially true if you actually maintain an otherwise healthy diet, too. If you are aware that there is a certain one you may have deficiency in, concentrate on that and maybe skip taking others. Also, watch for any signs that you may be feeling the effects of a supplemental overdose.
